Sunshine Blogger Award

sunshine-blogger-award.jpeg

The Sunshine Blogger award is a peer recognition for bloggers that inspire positivity, joy, warmth and any other emotions that you feel when you think about the sun.

Thank you very much to Red Metal from Extra Life for nominating The Codex: Online for the Sunshine Blogger award. Red Metal just recently published a post about Bioshock that inspired me to reinstall the game in my Steam Library and bump it up a few tiers on my growing backlog of ‘must play games’. I also thoroughly enjoy his ‘in summary’ posts, like this one from March 2018, in which he talks about films watched, games played and articles read. It’s a great way to keep his readers engaged, while presenting us with a high level overview in case we missed a post or two and would like to catch up. Make sure to check out his page!

This is the third Sunshine Blogger nomination that I have received and it feels just as great as the first! I’m happy that my posts provide sunny feelings for my readers and fellow bloggers alike. On a personal note: This nomination came at an especially good time, what with the mini-monsoons that Miami has had as of late. I’m all for cozy, rainy days indoors, but the rain seems to be targeting my morning and evening commutes Monday through Friday. *shakes fist at sky* I’m glad for the chance to write about Sunshine.

The Sunshine Blogger Award Nomination comes with a few rules:

Rules
1. Thank blogger(s) who nominated you in a blog post and link back to their blog.
2. Answer the 11 questions the blogger asked you.
3. Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions.
4. List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog.

And now, onto the questions and my answers:

  1. What is the dumbest competition you ever got in with your friends? Does every other time we went out drinking in our early twenties count?
  2. If you could form a band, which genre of music would you end up playing? Either country or folk/acoustic.
  3. What is the first film you ever watched in theaters? I’m not sure what the actual first film I ever watched in theaters was, but my earliest memory of going to the movies was to see Toy Story.
  4. What is the oldest film you’ve watched all the way through?
    seven samurai.jpeg
Seven Samurai, directed by Akira Kurosawa, is the winner. The movie came out in 1954 and has a run time of 3 hours and 27 minutes. It tells the story of a small, poor Japanese village that is under siege by bandits and the samurai the peasants hire to protect them. The movie has received critical acclaim for its historical accuracy, well-choreographed fight scenes and engaging characterization. Many hail it as the greatest Samurai movie ever. I thought it was pretty good too.
  5. Have you ever fallen asleep watching a film before? I have! I do it all the time when watching movies at home. The last time I fell asleep in a theater though was when I went to go see Disney’s Inside Out in 2015. I understand that a lot of people really liked that movie, so I won’t blame it for being boring – I think I was just exhausted.
  6. What is your personal record for most number of films watched in a day? I’d say that my personal record includes all three of the extended edition Lord of the Rings films or watching five of the eight Harry Potter movies in a single day.
  7. What is the single most heretical opinion you hold when it comes to video games? I think the Destiny games are hot trash.
  8. What is your proudest achievement playing a game?

Hmm. Here are a few that come to mind: My first no scope head shot in Halo 2, being invited to main tank mythic level content in WoW, beating God of War III on Chaos mode for my first play through (on a friend’s PS3), the feeling when a perfectly modded Skyrim game runs with no crashes and earning the best possible ending in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on my first play through.
  9. What do you believe to be one of the few advantages that gaming critics have over film critics? The opportunity to play games!
  10. Have you ever binge-watched a show? I consider myself to be a professional in the practice of binge-watching. Netflix and Hulu are to blame, of course.
  11. Do you follow any webcomics? I actually do! There is a great app called WEBTOON that features web comics made by artists of all skill levels and backgrounds. The app offers free access to the comics but if I find that I really enjoy one series, I’ll usually end up supporting the artists/creators on Patreon. Apocalyptic Horseplay by Boredman; Glacias by Yaruno and Nawa; and Elf and Warrior by AC Stuart and Victor Rosas II are a few worth checking out.

Thanks for the great questions from Red Metal. Here are my nominees:

16 bit dad
That Green Dude
Rachel Poli
For Fods Sake
Adventure Rules
Mr. Panda
Shiekah Plate
AmbiGaming
Aywren Sojourner
A Reluctant Hero
The Dragon’s Tea Party

Finally, here are my questions:

1. In your lifetime, what has been your favorite year for gaming?
2. Favorite Console? Why?
3. Favorite song on the radio, right now?
4. Favorite shower jam song?
5. Perfect weather?
6. A place you’ve traveled to before and wish you’d never left?
7. If you were invited to an episode of dancing with the stars, but had to be matched with a villain from your favorite game(s), who would your partner be?
8. Orlando, Florida. Would you rather spend the weekend at Universal Studios or Magic Kingdom (and all of it’s affiliated parks)?
9. Did you invent a language when you were young? What was it called?
10. Mc’Donalds or Burger King?
11. Do you like the feeling of being warm in cold weather or being cool on a sunny day?

Thanks again to Red Metal for the nomination. If you’ve been nominated, please do not feel pressured to answer any of the above questions – if you do answer the questions though, then I’m looking forward to hearing back from you!

As always, thanks for reading.

  1. Ah, I’m glad I inspired you to try out BioShock. It may be a far cry from one of my personal favorites, but it is worth checking out, I feel. I tend to watch at least one film per weekend, so I’ve been considering making those standalone, weekly posts.

The first film I can remember seeing in theaters was Blank Check. It is a product of its time in the worst possible sense of that term, being an uninspired Home Alone rip-off.

Weirdly, despite having watched Rashomon and High and Low, which were also directed by Akira Kurosawa, I have not yet seen Seven Samurai. It is a high priority though because I’ve heard nothing but great things about it.

Yeah, if I ever fall asleep during a film, it’s because I’m dead tired rather than bored.

I’ve been checking all of these responses and a lot of people have watched all three Lord of the Rings films in one day.

Though I haven’t played it, I know how you feel about Witcher 3; getting the best ending in Undertale on my first try is one of my proudest achievements as well.

“The opportunity to play games!” is the most objectively correct answer.

  2. Thank you for the nomination! I’m looking forward to answering these!

I don’t think I’d be able to sit through all 3 Lord of the Rings movies in one day, let alone the extended editions!

    1. There are few feeling sweeter, than starting ones day to the sweet sounds of Hobbiton and ending the same day, celebrating victory over Sauron in Minas Tirith!
